18.09.2023: New – Online application for extension of residence permit for refugees from Ukraine
From now on: Online application at LEA Berlin for an extension of the residence permit for refugees from Ukraine with immediate confirmation of the application.
Due to EU decisions on the protection status for refugees from Ukraine, which is initially valid for two years, the residence permits according to Section 24 of the German Residence Act (Aufenthaltsgesetz – AufenthG) were usually limited until 4.3.2024.
Refugees from Ukraine with a residence permit issued by LEA Berlin in accordance with Section 24 of the German Residence Act can already submit an online application for an extension of their residence permit to the Berlin State Office for Immigration (LEA Berlin – Ausländerbehörde):

You will then immediately receive a PDF document confirming your application on the LEA Berlin website. The document certifies that the residence permit remains valid beyond the previous validity date in accordance with Section 24 of the German Residence Act. The permit for gainful employment also remains valid. In the application you must also provide an email address where you can be reached.
Please be sure to save the document created online directly from the website as a PDF and print it out if possible!
Attention: A confirmation by email will not be made!
If you have submitted the online application, you will receive information from LEA Berlin on the further procedure in good time before 04.03.2024. It can be assumed that the EU will extend the protection status for refugees from Ukraine beyond 4.3.2024. It is expected that all residence permits issued in accordance with Section 24 of the German Residence Act will continue to be declared valid in Germany beyond 4.3.2024 by law. An appointment for an extension at the LEA / at the responsible immigration office will then not be necessary. If this is not the case, you will receive an appointment by email for an interview with LEA Berlin if you have registered online for the extension.
Attention: The online application linked above is only valid for refugees from Ukraine with a § 24 AufenthG residence permit issued by LEA Berlin! Please contact your local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) for more informations if your residence permit was issued elsewhere in Germany!
